Legend has it that during Japan’s Warring States period, the famous warrior Minamoto no Yoshitsune was fleeing and took refuge at a coastal spot in what is now present-day Takaoka City, Toyama Prefecture. Suddenly caught in heavy rain, he hid in a small cave beneath a large rock by the shore, waiting for the storm to pass and the skies to clear. In his honor, the large rock came to be known as Yoshitsune Rock, and the area was named Amidst Clear Skies Coast.

In winter, when weather conditions are favorable, visitors to Amidst Clear Skies Coast can witness a spectacular view: the Tateyama Mountain Range, with an average elevation of over 3,000 meters, stands like a grand screen above Toyama Bay. With its continuous peaks blanketed in snow, adding rich texture to the mountains, winter is considered the “best season” to view this scenery.

When visiting Amidst Clear Skies Coast to photograph the Tateyama Mountain Range, photographers typically use Female Rock as a foreground or midground. It is a small isolated island located just opposite Yoshitsune Rock, distinguished by a large tree growing on it. Additionally, train enthusiasts often aim their lenses at the curve at the southern end of the coast to capture the passing Himi Line trains. As the train rounds the bend, the Tateyama Mountain Range serves as a perfect backdrop; without context, one might easily mistake the scene for a highland railway.

By the way, Takaoka City is the hometown of manga artist Fujiko F. Fujio, so it’s common to see characters from his works around Toyama Prefecture. Some of the Himi Line trains (on selected routes) that run along the Toyama coastline feature a theme based on the popular anime “Doraemon,” offering photography enthusiasts a nostalgic ride if they’re lucky enough to catch one.
