Yilan Zhongxing Cultural and Creative Park’s “Projection Festival” is an installation-based art event that uses visuals as its main medium. The 2019 festival took place from December 14 to February 2 of the following year, with the theme “Once Upon a Time…” closely tied to stories and legends unique to Yilan. Through immersive and interactive displays, it offers a one-of-a-kind and unforgettable viewing experience.

The exhibition content transforms local rural anecdotes and unverifiable legends of Yilan into surreal and fantastical viewing experiences, also conveying how legends, much like projections, possess boundless imaginative space. The theme includes eight stories, such as “Princess Kavalan,” which features a large-scale model of Turtle Island, recreating Yilan’s breathtaking legend through light and shadow scenes spanning over ten meters of island, sea, and sky.

The work “Old Eyes and Fingers” takes traditional home-cooked dishes as its theme, breaking away from conventional cooking videos by using a fresh shooting angle and visual style to interpret Yilan’s most iconic dishes: “date cakes, dried flowers, meat floss cake, duck preserves, and shilu rou.” It employs a wide screen with a ratio as high as 1:5.3 to present the world of the kitchen countertop, incorporating stop-motion animation shot at 300 frames per second to capture the magical details of the cooking process.
Old Eyes and Fingers.
The work “Little Stone General” features the protective figure “Shigandang,” used to ward off evil spirits, brought to life through drawings by both children and adults. Using real-time scanning and computational technology, everyone joins Little Stone General in guarding the beautiful mountains and waters of the Lanyang Plain.
