The night view of Victoria Harbour is a must-see when visiting Hong Kong. The New Year's Eve countdown fireworks show, launched in 2008, has also become a global focus of New Year celebrations. In 2013, an even more spectacular fireworks extravaganza was added, making it a popular holiday destination for many tourists in recent years.
Due to the ongoing "anti-extradition bill" protests, Hong Kong’s tourist numbers have dropped by 56%—a situation never seen before—which has severely impacted local tourism. Hotels that used to maintain a 90% occupancy rate now range between 30–40% and 60–70%.
Although this year’s New Year's Eve fireworks have been canceled, there will still be an enhanced version of the "Symphony of Lights," a 10-minute music and laser show, with fireworks launched from the rooftops of some surrounding buildings. The highlight of the "Hong Kong WinterFest"—the Christmas tree—will be displayed in Statue Square and remain until January 1, 2020.
