New attraction in Penghu: Old military camp transformed into “Qingwan Cactus Park”

Summer is the most vibrant season in Penghu, as travelers from home and abroad bring a joyful atmosphere to this pearl in the Taiwan Strait. This year, Penghu welcomes a brand-new attraction — the “Qingwan Cactus Park.” In addition to the locally grown cacti, the park also showcases bizarre and wonderful cacti from around the world, with over 450 species, making it feel like stepping into a fantastical cactus wonderland.

In the past, during Penghu’s scorching summers, visitors could always enjoy cool purple-red drinks like cactus ice and cactus juice, which tasted sweet and tangy. Most of these were made from the species scientifically known as “Opuntia ficus-indica,” commonly referred to as the “golden club cactus.” Even though the golden club cactus is the most common variety, its origin can be traced back to Mexico. It was later introduced to Penghu by earlier generations. Despite Penghu’s strong northeastern monsoon, the resilient golden club cactus managed to thrive. With the opening of Qingwan Cactus Park, even more unique species have been introduced. Xu Shiping, chairman of the Qingwan Cactus Park, stated that the park houses cactus species from around the world, including those from North America, South America, and various desert plants.

“Our cacti are works of art.”Unlike many foreign cactus parks with fixed collections, Qingwan Cactus Park regularly introduces new and unique cactus varieties through collaboration with Japanese cactus master “Naoki Hanekane.” By using different pots and species, they create a unique cactus art experience.

The Qingwan Cactus Park was built on the site of an abandoned military camp from the Japanese colonial era. Covering 18 hectares and situated at an altitude of about 37 meters, the area was originally covered with native Penghu cacti. Now, after renovation by the park management, it has become a comfortable “cactus paradise” with sea views. The cacti of Qingwan are scattered across old military artillery positions, bunkers, and ocean-view platforms, offering diverse sightseeing experiences. The park also features adventure experience zones, greenhouse plant displays, DIY activity areas, and more, making it a brand-new tourist attraction in Penghu.

Xu Shiping also mentioned that the first phase of the cactus park is already quite impressive. When the second and third phases are completed, a grand opening ceremony will be held. The park also aims to create more job opportunities for local residents in Penghu and help retain talent on the island.
