Bad lighting ruins photos on rainy days? The "indestructible secret" of the Fulong Sand Sculpture Festival

After several days of continuous rain, are the sand sculptures at the ongoing Fulong Sand Sculpture Art Festival all ruined? It turns out the organizers have a “secret technique” that makes the sand sculptures not only resistant to rain but even stronger after getting wet.

Resident sand sculptor Chen Kuntian explained that all the sand sculptures on site have been pre-sprayed with eco-friendly glue. From the initial steps such as sand filtering, stacking, building molds, watering, and compacting, every foundational process is carried out with extra care. Especially during the sand filtering and stacking stages, foreign objects in the sand are removed to ensure finer sand quality, which results in more delicate sculptures. Moreover, the molds are constructed using international standard techniques, not conventional construction molds, making the base of the artworks very stable.

Additionally, this year special emphasis has been placed on the compacting process. The tighter the sand is compacted, the more detailed and intricate the carving surfaces can be, allowing sand sculpture artists to create boldly and express their creativity freely. As a result, the sculptures also become more solid and sturdy.

Beyond the solid foundational work, eco-friendly glue is continuously sprayed during the sculpting process to enhance the adhesion between sand particles. This glue naturally weathers away after six months, returning to nature and helping protect the precious golden sand. After the masterpieces are completed, resident sand sculptors inspect the works daily and reapply eco-friendly glue for maintenance, forming a protective layer on the surface. Therefore, even when hit by heavy rain, the sand sculptures remain largely intact.

After more than a week of heavy rain, an inspection of the 66 international masterpieces on site found that only the “adorable sheep doll”—the little face of the sheep—had collapsed slightly due to rain damage. However, the sand sculptor, acting like a cosmetic expert, quickly restored the lamb’s appearance. All other works remained intact. The organizers also mobilized resident sand sculpture artists to perform daily minor touch-ups on the sand sculptures, ensuring timely care even during heavy rainfall.
