Every year from mid-November to around Christmas, vast fields of wild lupins (Lupinus) bloom along the shores of Lake Tekapo in New Zealand’s South Island, creating a sea of pink and purple flowers. Model REN and photographer Mitchell Clark seized this once-a-year opportunity to capture stunning photos in the flower fields, which have garnered numerous likes and praise from netizens.

Lupins (Lupinus), commonly known as lupines, are popular ornamental plants that typically bloom in spring and bear fruit in summer. They thrive in cool climates and are cold-resistant, which is why they are commonly found growing wild in temperate regions. Since the seasons in the Southern Hemisphere are opposite to those in the Northern Hemisphere (where we are), the lupins there have just entered their blooming season.

The Mandarin pronunciation of “lupin” sounds similar to “roadside flower.” REN, who has visited Lake Tekapo several times for photography, also mentioned in one of her tweets that the lupins at Lake Tekapo usually look like a bunch of wild grass, and in winter, the area is lifeless and seems utterly desolate. But when spring comes and they bloom, they become unbelievably beautiful. It's worth mentioning that the glacial waters flowing from the Southern Alps into Lake Tekapo are rich in minerals, giving the lake its emerald-green color, which perfectly complements the purple and pink hues of the lupins, creating a breathtakingly beautiful scene.
