The globally renowned picturesque town of Hallstatt, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, was struck by a major fire on November 30. As most of the town's buildings are primarily wooden structures, four wooden buildings were almost completely destroyed. During the rescue efforts, one firefighter was injured.

The fire broke out at around 3:30 a.m. local time. Due to the tightly packed wooden houses primarily constructed of wood, despite strenuous rescue efforts, four wooden buildings were nearly razed. Fortunately, only one firefighter was injured, with no other casualties — a small mercy in an otherwise devastating event.

The origin of Hallstatt: “Hall” comes from the Celtic word for “salt,” while “statt” means “town” in German. With its undulating terrain and houses built along the mountainsides, the population has remained relatively constant, perfectly fitting its reputation as a lakeside town.

This year has seen far too many historic buildings lost to fire and destruction. Yesterday, it was also reported that the century-old "Café des 2 Moulins," beloved by the famous French painter Jean-Claude, caught fire — a truly disastrous year for world heritage sites.
