Someone arranged autumn leaves on a water basin, sorting them by shade of color. Photographer @wasabitool captured this stunning scene and shared it on social media, where it received widespread praise from netizens who said the photos gave them a feeling of “spiritual cleansing.”
While it’s unclear who came up with the idea, arranging hundreds of autumn leaves (estimated by sight alone) by color to create a gradient effect requires both ingenuity and patience. Of course, even the most beautiful peony needs green leaves for contrast — while the maple leaves may be the stars, the supporting elements are also carefully considered and not placed haphazardly.
After seeing the photos, netizens left comments praising the beauty of the hand-washing basin: “The most beautiful basin I’ve ever seen!” “An outstanding gradient that’s truly enchanting!” Some felt the beauty was so profound it touched their souls, giving them a sense of “spiritual purification” and a healing effect.
In Japan, worshippers traditionally wash their hands and rinse their mouths with water from a basin at the temizuya (purification pavilion) before entering a temple or shrine, symbolizing the cleansing of the body before prayer. The photographer noted that the photo was taken at “Ryūga Benten,” also known as Yougu Temple in Nagaokakyō, Kyoto Prefecture. In summer, Yougu Temple is a popular spot for viewing hydrangeas, while in autumn it becomes a renowned place for leaf-peeping. In fact, when the hydrangeas (known as hortensia in Hong Kong) are in bloom, the basin also features colorful hydrangeas, which are just as stunning as the autumn leaves.
