JR Harajuku Station is Tokyo's oldest wooden train station, built in 1924 with a history of nearly 100 years. However, news has emerged that it will be demolished, and a new Harajuku Station with European-style design will be built nearby.

JR Harajuku Station is located near popular Tokyo attractions such as Meiji Shrine, Takeshita Street, and Omotesando, making it an important hub for many tourists and holding significant historical value. However, due to the building's age and its wooden construction, which poses low fire resistance and safety concerns, East Japan Railway Company announced plans to begin demolition after the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Meanwhile, the new Harajuku Station is currently under construction next to the old one. It will retain elements of the old station’s spire and European-style façade, and will be built with fire-resistant materials. The project is expected to be completed on March 21, 2020. The demolition news has saddened many local residents, but after considering safety factors and consulting with local business associations, the decision to demolish was ultimately made.
