Located in Biei, Hokkaido, the Blue Pond gained international fame overnight after being chosen as a default wallpaper for Apple computers. If you have a good memory, you might recall the details in the wallpaper: bare trees dusted with fine snow, and the pond water still a vivid blue. This scene perfectly captures the moment of the first snowfall in winter.

Last year, Hokkaido, Japan, experienced its latest first snowfall in 128 years, with the capital Sapporo seeing its first snow in the early hours of November 20. Although most parts of Hokkaido saw their first snow in early November this year, it was still about a week later than the average.

Photography enthusiasts certainly won’t miss the stunning sight of the Blue Pond in its first snow. Since 2014, when lighting was installed around the pond for evening viewing, visitors can enjoy not only daytime photography but also a completely different ambiance at night. However, one thing to keep in mind is that after snowfall, the ground is covered in snow, so it’s advised not to step beyond designated walkways or enter fenced or warning-signed areas to avoid danger or causing trouble for others.
