On the 22nd, Tibet launched China's first high-altitude sickness disease insurance, filling a gap in the country's insurance sector.
Due to Tibet's unique high-altitude climate, the biggest risk faced by visitors to the region is diseases caused by high-altitude sickness, especially the most common high-altitude pulmonary edema and high-altitude cerebral edema. If not treated promptly, these can be life-threatening. However, among the existing personal accident insurance and travel accident insurance products on the market, a range of injuries caused by high-altitude sickness are not covered, making high-altitude sickness disease insurance a blind spot in the insurance industry.
To protect the health and safety of travelers visiting Tibet and to attract more tourists from around the world and across China to the region, the Tibet Autonomous Region Tourism Bureau and China Life Insurance Tibet Branch have specifically developed "China Life Plateau Specific Disease Cost Compensation Medical Insurance" tailored to Tibet’s unique tourism environment and safety needs. This is China's first high-altitude sickness disease insurance. The introduction of this insurance product will help ensure that visitors can travel to Tibet with peace of mind and safety.
Wang Songping, Deputy Director of the Tibet Autonomous Region Tourism Bureau, believes that the launch of this innovative insurance product is a new breakthrough for the insurance industry as well as for Tibet’s tourism sector, addressing the concerns of travelers visiting the region.
According to information provided, this insurance product offers comprehensive coverage, including accident protection (death, disability), outpatient medical and inpatient treatment compensation for plateau-specific diseases, as well as funeral expense compensation. It meets the risk protection needs of travelers to Tibet in a more complete way. The insurance is available to all individuals traveling to Tibet, with a coverage period of 15 days. Premiums are divided into two categories: 50 yuan and 100 yuan. Payments must be made in a lump sum, with the maximum per-person coverage amounts reaching 100,000 yuan and 200,000 yuan respectively.
