Gion Kouna
Department stores close early in the evening, and shops shut their doors not long after. Is there anywhere worth visiting in Kyoto at night? Absolutely — remember Kawaramachi Shijo? It's a great spot!?
Gion Kouna, which opened in 1962, is located right here. It was established because many of Kyoto’s temples and historic sites close at dusk, and the authorities, considering that foreign tourists had nowhere to go at night, created this theater dedicated to performances for international visitors, allowing them to experience traditional Japanese performing arts.
Walking straight down Hanamikoji Street leads you to this unique white-performance arts venue. It’s not only a must-visit for overseas tourists but is now also a key destination for many Japanese visitors from other regions exploring Kyoto. While the ticket price isn’t cheap, in less than an hour you’ll enjoy a tightly-packed performance featuring tea ceremony, koto music, ikebana (flower arranging), Bunraku puppet theater, gagaku (court music), kyogen (comic theater), and Kyoto-style dance. Although some acts may be hard to fully grasp, experiencing these core elements of Japanese culture in under an hour is truly worthwhile. Especially notable is Bunraku, similar to Taiwan’s traditional glove puppetry. Additionally, apart from regular performances, every spring it hosts the “Miya Dance,” one of Kyoto’s five major dances, drawing large crowds of tourists.
Not far from Gion Kouna lies Shirakawa, one of the areas richest in traditional Kyoto charm and beauty. It preserves many townhouse-tea shop buildings from the late Edo period.
