All nine recipients of the fifth "Wanderers Project" by the Cloud Gate Dance Theatre have returned home, sharing diverse experiences and emotions from their travels. In the past six years, the project has received over 1,100 applications, with 53 wanderers selected, and 44 having completed their journeys. This time, the farthest destination reached was Damascus, the highest climb was over 5,000 meters up the Himalayas, and a 10-month trip across Indochina broke the record for the longest duration of travel.

Continuing the socially engaged spirit of the previous edition, this year’s wanderers also emphasized various forms of humanitarian care. Cui Suxin participated in the anti-nuclear movement in Japan; Cai Yongqing filmed a documentary tracing the roots of exiled Tibetans; Yang Yunsheng experienced life as a homeless person in Japan; Lin Yihua, who promotes mountain education in Taiwan, successfully climbed the Himalayas; Chen Naiqi’s journey lasted as long as 10 months as she participated in epidemic prevention and health education work across Indochina.
Beyond interactions between people and the environment, this edition also returned to the essence of “self-exploration” during wandering. Chen Yihua searched for the paths of literati through old bookstalls in China; Lu Ping traveled to Damascus to explore the landscapes seen through the eyes of poets; theater director Shi Donglin went to India to study yoga and sitar; documentary filmmaker Qu Xiaowei used her grandmother’s recipes as a starting point, retracing the route her grandmother took when fleeing from mainland China to Taiwan, and rediscovering the hometown flavors in her grandmother’s food.

The "Wanderers Project" aims to encourage young people to step out of Taiwan, engage directly with communities, and enrich their personal experiences. Applications for the 2011 "Wanderers Project" are now open until July 15. Those under 45 years old who are passionate about creative work or social services are welcome to apply.
