The Tainan Qixi 16th Birthday Arts Festival has entered its ninth year and will be held from August 13 to 15 at the Confucius Temple Cultural Park in Tainan City and surrounding attractions, featuring lively performances and activities. The "Turning 16" coming-of-age ceremony is a Tainan tradition that dates back over 300 years. In the early days, many child laborers were employed in Tainan, and turning 16 meant they could earn full wages. Therefore, the age of 16 was a very important day for child workers, not only marking their transition into adulthood but also officially announcing to family and friends that they were ready to take on family and social responsibilities. This year’s 16th Birthday Arts Festival invites teenagers from around the world to come to Tainan to celebrate turning 16 and promote Taiwan’s unique culture.

The 16th Birthday Arts Festival features a total of 14 main events, including “Back to 16 – YOUTH Play & Create Camp,” “Family Turning 16, Rituals Just as Smooth,” “Taiwan’s Real Youth – 16-Year-Old Youth Camp,” “Moving Forward at 16 – Bicycle Ride Around Taiwan,” “i-Creativity – Tainan Daughters’ Festival,” “Tainan, Kyoto, Sendai, Guangzhou – International Qixi Exchange Exhibition,” “The Seventh Mother’s Birthday – Coming-of-Age Rituals for 16-Year-Olds Exhibition,” “Graceful Dances and Nonstop Performances – International Grand Gala,” “Starting from Love, Clothes That Amaze,” “Explore Qixi Through Six Challenges,” “16th Birthday Creative Market,” “16-Year-Old Theater,” “Online Connection and Lucky Draw,” “16th Birthday Hope Map.” The “International Grand Gala” invites eight international teams to Taiwan to compete with domestic groups, offering the public a unique cultural feast.
In addition to performance events, the arts festival also incorporates the charity activity “Starting from Love, Clothes That Amaze,” a T-shirt sale to raise funds. Inspired by the design concept of 16 = 8+8 = ∞+∞ = infinity, representing the infinite possibilities of being 16, all proceeds will be donated to the Huashan Foundation to contribute to a good cause.
