Attention puppet fans!? The 2010 Yunlin International Puppet Festival will be held from October 16 to October 24. This long-running festival has invited puppet troupes from both home and abroad to gather in Yunlin this year. You can not only enjoy cultural performances from different countries but also help ensure the sustainable legacy of Taiwan’s puppetry, expanding the artistic horizons of the art form.
Yunlin is the birthplace of Taiwanese puppetry, with its two major schools—Zhou and Ge—being passed down through generations. The county is now home to over 100 troupes, making it the top in Taiwan. Its performance styles include traditional, Golden Light, and television puppetry, showcasing the richness of the puppet culture. Puppetry is a comprehensive art form that integrates literature, drama, music, storytelling, carving, painting, and embroidery, presenting an amalgamated beauty—it can truly be called a cultural miracle of Taiwan.
Since its first edition in 1999, the puppet festival has gathered enough momentum to make Yunlin’s puppetry a notable intangible cultural asset at home and abroad. The 2010 “Call Me Number One” will offer a new interpretation of the miraculous “codes,” taking place at the Yunlin Puppet Theater in Huwei Township, Yunlin County. It features world-renowned acts such as Japan’s string-controlled puppet troupe Taketa Ningyoza, Singapore’s Paper Monkey Theatre, France’s Tiramisu Theatre with their piece “Bear, Going to Work!?”, and the Czech puppet troupe performing a jazz-blues-infused marionette show “Swinging Puppets.” Local troupes have also skillfully integrated puppet education into the event, including a national creative puppetry competition, puppet art exhibition, toy creation, and photography contests. The public is warmly invited to participate.
