This year marks the 60th anniversary of the first human ascent of Mount Everest, and the Tibet Mountaineering Team plans to hold the 11th Mountaineering Congress this autumn to commemorate the occasion.
The Mountaineering Congress will begin on September 26, with main activities including climbs of Qizhi Peak, Qizhi II Peak, and high-altitude trekking.
Nima Tsering, overall commander of this year’s Mountaineering Congress and deputy director of the Tibet Autonomous Region Sports Bureau, told Xinhua News Agency that the three activities—climbing Qizhi Peak, Qizhi II Peak, and high-altitude trekking—will be held separately, with an estimated total of around 100 mountaineers participating in the congress.
Nima Tsering said the congress will invite well-known mountaineers from mainland China to participate, guide participants in using equipment, and share climbing experiences and discuss ways to advance the development of mountaineering.
On May 29, 1953, New Zealander Sir Edmund Hillary and Nepali Sherpa Tenzing Norgay of a British mountaineering team became the first to successfully reach the summit of Mount Everest.
Tibet held its first Mountaineering Congress in 2001, and this year’s event will conclude on October 7.
Mount Everest is also known as Mount Qomolangma, or Mount Everest in mainland China. 1020807
