A man from Changhua County, Yang Cangpai, died yesterday after falling into a valley while cycling up the Nenggao Mountain Trail in Nantou County. His body was airlifted down this morning by helicopter, leaving his family in grief.
A joint cycling team of 17 people from Changhua attempted to conquer the Nenggao Mountain Trail in Ren’ai Township, Nantou, yesterday. Around 12:30 p.m., teammate Yang Cangpai fell nearly 200 meters down a deep valley along a steep cliff section, about 9.8 kilometers from the Tungyuan Trailhead. Team members risked their lives to descend into the valley to rescue him, but Yang had already tragically passed away.
The Ren’ai Branch of Nantou County Fire Bureau was alerted and dispatched personnel for assistance. The bureau also requested a helicopter from the Air Rescue Squadron to perform an aerial recovery, but the mission was aborted due to poor weather conditions.
Ground rescue teams, including police and volunteer firefighters, arrived at the scene at 4:25 p.m. and managed to move the deceased’s body onto the road around 6 p.m. At approximately 7:30 p.m., the body was temporarily taken to Tianchi Mountain Lodge in preparation for an airlift down the mountain.
The fire bureau stated that the rescue helicopter flew to the lodge this morning at 8 a.m. to retrieve the body, which was then transported to Ren’ai Junior High School before being sent to the Puli Branch of Taichung Veterans General Hospital. Police and prosecutors were notified to conduct an investigation, and the body was handed over to the family for further arrangements.
Family members and teammates at the scene expressed deep sorrow, saying that Yang Cangpai was passionate about mountaineering and adventure activities, often cycling up mountains almost every month. They said they were heartbroken by the unexpected tragedy. 1020819
