A female hiker who was part of a team climbing the main peak of Nenggao Mountain suffered a foot injury and was unable to walk. She was carried by her teammates to a campsite near Taiwan Pond to await rescue, with rescuers expected to reach the site this afternoon.
A 21-member hiking team from northern Taiwan was ascending the main peak of Nenggao Mountain in Ren'ai Township, Nantou County, yesterday when a 35-year-old female team member surnamed Tsai accidentally injured her foot and could no longer walk. Her teammates spent over three hours taking turns carrying her to a campsite near Taiwan Pond, and they sought help from police and firefighters around 7 p.m. last night.
The Nantou County Fire Bureau mobilized nine police, volunteer, and civilian firefighters to head up the mountain overnight for the rescue, and also applied for helicopter assistance this morning. However, due to poor weather conditions and low visibility in the mountainous area, an aerial rescue could not be carried out.
The fire bureau stated that ground rescue personnel advanced to Tianchi (Heavenly Lake) and Yunhai Patrol Station in two groups starting at 9 a.m., and they are expected to rendezvous with the hiking team around 4 p.m. If the weather does not improve, the injured hiker may have to be carried down the mountain for treatment by ground rescuers. 1021012
