A man surnamed Xiao was hiking on Kaohsiung’s Shoushan (Monkey Mountain) today for exercise. It is suspected that monkeys mistook a plastic bag he was carrying for food and tried to snatch it. During the scuffle, Xiao was bitten and was sent to the hospital by police and firefighters upon receiving the report.
The Kaohsiung City Fire Bureau stated that after receiving a report of a hiker being bitten by monkeys on Shoushan, rescue personnel were dispatched to the scene. Initial examination showed that Xiao had severe puncture and laceration wounds on his left arm from the bite.
After being bitten by the monkeys, Xiao was bleeding profusely, with blood strewn all over the scene in a shocking sight. Rescue personnel immediately provided initial disinfection and bandaging before sending him to Kaohsiung Medical University Hospital for treatment.
Authorities noted that due to improper feeding by tourists, the monkeys on Kaohsiung’s Shoushan have developed a habit of assuming that hikers carrying plastic bags or backpacks have food inside, leading to such food-snatching incidents. Hikers are advised not to feed the monkeys. 1021110
