A hiker surnamed Chen was climbing Yushan with a tour group on New Year’s Eve when he suddenly suffered from altitude sickness and requested rescue from the National Search and Rescue Center. In response, the Air Force Base in Chiayi dispatched a Sea Gull helicopter on the morning of December 31. Fortunately, the terrain was flat, eliminating the need for a winch rescue, and the patient was airlifted to Tri-Service General Hospital’s Chiayi Branch for treatment in less than half an hour, allowing him to safely spend New Year’s Eve.

As they approached higher altitudes, Chen began feeling dizzy and could no longer walk down on his own. His teammates then contacted the National Search and Rescue Center to dispatch a helicopter. The Air Force Chiayi Base’s rescue team received the report at 11 a.m., warmed up the helicopter in 10 minutes, and headed out. After locating Chen, who was still conscious, they rescued him and brought him aboard the aircraft. Initial examinations found no external injuries.
The rescue team returned to the Shuishang Base within half an hour and transferred Chen to a fire department ambulance, which then took him to Tri-Service General Hospital’s Chiayi Branch.
