The death toll from a massive avalanche on Mount Everest yesterday has risen to 15, most of them Nepalese mountain guides and cooks. The Nepal Mountaineering Association described it as the deadliest accident in the history of human expeditions to Everest.
The incident occurred early yesterday morning local time, when the group of guides were at a camp around 5,900 meters above sea level, preparing for subsequent climbers, when the avalanche hit.
According to data from the Nepalese government, since the first successful ascent of Everest in 1953, more than 4,400 people have reached the summit, while approximately 250 have lost their lives.
