The National Mountaineering Symposium is hosted in rotation by three alpine national parks under the Construction and Planning Agency of the Ministry of the Interior: Taroko, Yushan, and Shei-Pa. Over the course of two days, November 14 and 15, it is being held at the Wenshan Visitor Center of the Shei-Pa National Park Headquarters, attracting more than 230 scholars, experts, and mountaineering clubs who share a passion for the mountains.
Construction and Planning Agency Director-General Tseng Dar-jen pointed out that Taiwan’s three alpine national parks are home to a total of 76 peaks above 3,000 meters, which attract numerous climbers every year. Therefore, it is essential to emphasize mountaineering management and safety. To this end, initiatives such as establishing the National Park Mountaineering School, streamlining entry permit applications, mandating the carrying of GPS communication devices, and creating a mountaineering training platform are all part of promoting “good mountaineering practices.”
The Shei-Pa National Park Headquarters stated that this year’s symposium has also outlined six major discussion topics: “Trail Maintenance and Safety Facility Services,” “Internationalization of Taiwan’s Mountain Tourism,” “Lightweight Mountain Food and Gear,” “Development of Mountaineering Skills and Guide Capabilities,” “Mountain Wilderness Environment and Outdoor Education,” and “Mountaineering Management and Safety Responsibility.”
The Wenshan Visitor Center has also arranged a variety of experience activities including rock climbing, crampon use, rope walking, as well as demonstrations on drone search and rescue applications and overseas climbing achievements. It is hoped that through the National Mountaineering Symposium, more creativity and action will be inspired to make Taiwan’s mountaineering environment healthier and more robust. 1031115
