In 2005, a father, Johan Otter, and his daughter Jenna were visiting Montana's Glacier National Park in the U.S. when they experienced the most terrifying attack. Even though more than 10 years have passed, recalling the incident still sends shivers down their spines.
At that moment, a mother bear appeared out of nowhere, accompanied by her two cubs. As a parent, your first instinct is to rush forward to protect your child — and that’s exactly what he did. But he was immediately attacked by the mother bear. She tore off nearly 80% of his scalp, broke his neck, and injured his eyeball. Johan recalled that all he could see were her claws and teeth. Despite his severe injuries, he remained standing, driven by survival instinct to get down the mountain as quickly as possible.
His daughter also suffered a life-threatening attack. The bear knocked her to the ground and bit her head. At the time, she could feel the bear’s lower jaw on her chin and its upper jaw pressing against the back of her head. She didn’t feel any pain, only pressure. She immediately played dead, and fortunately, the bear soon left. Then, she shouted loudly to seek help from other hikers. However, even after finding people, it still took them three hours to descend the mountain.
Although the father still suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) after recovering, they continue to hike the same route. Just hearing them recount the experience, I could fully feel that fear too. Thankfully, they survived luckily, and we also witnessed this heroic father’s immediate reaction to protect his daughter — it’s truly touching!
