India is a deeply religious country with numerous festivals taking place throughout the year. The Maheshwar region is one of the sacred pilgrimage sites for Hindus, featuring dozens of temples along the holy Narmada River. Every February, the “Holy Water Festival” is held here, with three days of celebrations that include vibrant music and dance performances, bringing the city to life.

The 2011 Indian Holy Water Festival was held from February 18 to 20. Each evening during these three days featured performances of classical Indian music and traditional cultural shows. Thousands of oil lamps were lit at the venue, creating a spectacular scene along the riverbanks. The Ahilya Fort hotel in India also launched special activities for the festival, inviting travelers to join the celebrations in Maheshwar. Guests could enjoy the festivities in front of temples, on riverboats, and within the centuries-old fort. The hotel also offered guided demonstrations of music and dance, providing deeper insight into traditional Indian culture.

The Ahilya Fort hotel is part of the Relais & Chateaux group and is owned by Indian prince Richard Holkar, who was also one of the initiators of the 2000 Holy Water Festival. Therefore, during the festival each year, the hotel reserves the best viewing spots, offering guests more opportunities to interact with local musicians and dancers—an exceptionally unique experience.
