The Yilan County Fire Bureau said today that a volunteer from the Taiwan Eco-Hiking School got lost on the Siji Forest Trail in Datong Township, and local police and firefighters have entered the mountains to carry out a rescue operation.

The bureau received a report in the afternoon that a group of eight volunteers from the Taiwan Eco-Hiking School had planned a four-day, three-night trek along the Taiga Vertical Trail. They entered the Taipingshan National Forest Recreation Area on the 25th, headed for Kalo Lake, and then planned to descend via Kalo Mountain through the Siji Forest Trail in Datong Township.

The fire bureau said that one man surnamed Wu, who suffers from ankylosing spondylitis, felt unwell during the trip and thus chose to leave the group a day early to descend alone. However, he got lost on the Siji Forest Trail, and local search and rescue personnel have joined forces with officials from the Forestry Bureau to conduct the search. 1050827
