The Xueshan West Ridge in Shei-Pa National Park has been closed since July 2013 due to multiple typhoons. After multiple inspections and assessments by conservation rangers, volunteers, and the trail adoption group, it will reopen on January 4, 2017. Mountain entry permits can be applied for online starting at 7 a.m. on the 28th.
After the 921 Earthquake in 1999, several sections along the 0K–26K stretch of the 230 Forest Road on the Xueshan West Ridge suffered severe roadbed loss and landslides. For safety reasons, the Shei-Pa National Park Administration suspended public access until April 2010.
On July 11, 2013, the Xueshan West Ridge was closed again due to the severe impact of Typhoon Soudelor and subsequent consecutive typhoons. Over the past three years, multiple trail inspections and evaluations have been conducted. Starting next year, reopening will align with the park’s trail classification system.
The park administration stated that the Xueshan West Ridge is classified as a C-level route under Shei-Pa National Park’s hiking trail grading system. Applicants for this route must have proof of B-level or higher mountaineering experience. Hikers are advised to take a high route around the large landslide at 9K on the 230 Forest Road. As it is currently snow season, all relevant snow season regulations must be followed.
The park administration reminds hikers that due to the long distance of the Xueshan West Ridge route, they should carry equipment with positioning capabilities and communication devices for emergencies to enhance safety. Thorough pre-trip planning and preparation are essential before departure.
