A 78-year-old surnamed Lin from Kaohsiung joined a community tour to hike the Mingfeng Ancient Trail in Touwu on the 7th. While admiring the scenery on his own, he inadvertently strayed from the group and wandered into a side trail of the Mingfeng Ancient Trail. Police received a report from fellow hikers about his disappearance around 12 p.m. and immediately launched a rescue operation.
Shitan Police Precinct Chief Liu Bingyi of the Dahua Police Bureau coordinated with over 10 personnel from the Shitan Fire Department, volunteer police, and volunteer firefighters to rush to the Mingfeng Ancient Trail for the rescue. Due to the numerous side trails on the Mingfeng Ancient Trail, rescuers used a GPS satellite positioning system to locate Lin’s position around 1:35 p.m. and found him around 2 p.m. sitting on a rock on one of the side trails, resting due to exhaustion.
Rescuers then used a flexible stretcher to carry Lin down the mountain over the course of two hours. Fortunately, Lin sustained no injuries. After resting briefly and regaining some strength, he was handed over to his family members for care. The proactive mobilization and mountain rescue efforts by police and firefighters earned high praise and gratitude from his family, as well as applause from other hikers along the trail.
