April marks the Thai New Year, and the most iconic event—the Water Splashing Festival—is a widely known celebration. Locals in Thailand enjoy a three-day holiday to join the festivities on the streets. But now, those wanting to experience the Water Splashing Festival don’t need to travel abroad—they can head to Huaxin Street in Zhonghe District, New Taipei City, to enjoy the fun and “get blessed by water”!

The Water Splashing Festival is the New Year celebration for Thailand, Myanmar, Laos, and Cambodia. Huaxin Street in Zhonghe District is home to a large community of Myanmar Chinese, earning it the nickname “Myanmar Chinese Street.” The annual Zhonghe Water Splashing Festival in April has become a major event in New Taipei City. The 2011 Zhonghe Water Splashing Festival will take place on April 10. In addition to showcasing the diverse cultures of Myanmar, Laos, the Philippines, and other countries, this year there will be no use of fire trucks. Instead, “themed water-splashing sculpture pools” and sprinklers—featuring designs like elephants and swans—will allow participants to truly experience the blessing-filled act of splashing water.

Beyond the fun of water splashing, the event will also feature art and cultural exhibitions, family-friendly performances, and booths set up by charitable organizations offering games. Participants who collect three stamps on their challenge vouchers can redeem food or water guns and enter a lucky draw for a chance to win round-trip tickets to Myanmar and Thailand.
