It’s not uncommon to have a name for a vegetable market, but do you have a “night market” name? Taiwan’s night market culture is famous worldwide and has become a must-visit attraction for travelers. Taipei City’s “Delicious Night Markets, Hundred Delights for You” series of events kicks off with a call for night market-related names. Whether the names are the same or similar in Mandarin or Hokkien, or sound like puns, just submit your ID and a short essay for a chance to win a night market voucher.
Night markets in Taiwan are bustling every day.
The “night market,” filled with traditional Taiwanese snacks and local charm, offers an exciting experience of food, fun, shopping, and entertainment. Not only is it a daily shopping destination for Taipei residents, but it’s also one of the must-visit spots for both domestic and international tourists. Starting April 11, 2011, Taipei City launched its first joint promotional campaign for well-known night markets, themed around “Living Taipei” and “Fantastic 100.” The campaign includes a night market name collection and a series of promotional events at seven major night markets (Raohe Street Night Market, Qingguang Market, Shuangcheng Night Market, Xichang, Wuzhou, Guangzhou, and Huaxi Street Night Market), aiming to attract both local and international visitors, showcase the image of Taipei’s night markets, and boost surrounding business opportunities.

The “Night Market Lucky Name Collection Campaign” is calling for 10 participants whose names sound similar to the word “night market” in Mandarin or Hokkien, or whose names match or sound like those of the seven featured night markets — for example: Ye Shihao, Lin Yaqi, Huang Raohe, Liu Shuangcheng, Zheng Huaxi, etc. The submission period runs from April 11, 2011, to April 29, 2011. Application forms can be downloaded from the official campaign website. Entries should be submitted via mail and must include a copy of an ID document, along with a short essay of no more than 200 words on either “My Favorite Night Market” or “A Funny Story About My Name.” The selected 10 applicants will be announced on the campaign website on May 2 and will each receive a NT$1,000 night market voucher. They will also be invited to attend the promotional press conference for Taipei City’s 2011 night market vendor hub event. The 100th Anniversary of the Republic of China mascot, Rock Baby, will also be there, dancing to night market tunes to kick off this year’s night market festivities.
