The 26th day of the Yilan National Games featured the mountain bike cross-country race, which moved to the Wubiao Pit Scenic Area, once renowned as one of the "Eight Scenic Spots of LanYang" known as "Five Delights of Forest and Spring." The area's stunning landscapes and pleasant environment provided an ideal setting for athletes to perform at their best, attracting numerous spectators who cheered on the riders' impressive displays. In the women’s category, Taichung’s Zhou Peini, dubbed the "Queen of Downhill," secured the gold medal with a time of 1 hour, 39 minutes, 29.93 seconds, overpowering her competitors. Local athlete He Yici claimed the silver with a time of 1 hour, 43 minutes, 28.93 seconds, while Pingtung’s Tsai Yayu took the bronze in 1 hour, 47 minutes, 00.64 seconds.
He Yici, currently a senior in university, was the home team’s top hope for gold. She ranked third in the 2016 National Cross-Country Mountain Bike Championships. Despite having suffered fractures at two locations on her right collarbone, she fought valiantly till the end. Leading for most of the race, she was unfortunately overtaken by Zhou Peini in the final lap, missing out on the gold medal—a heartbreaking moment for her supporters.
In the men’s category, the gold medal went to Taoyuan’s "Ah Dan" Jiang Shengshan, the king of Taiwanese mountain biking, who has claimed multiple titles in cross-country and downhill events. His winning time was 1 hour, 52 minutes, 57.36 seconds. Jiang also won gold in the mountain bike cross-country event at the 102nd and 104th National Games, and made history by taking gold in the 2016 Crankworx Giant Dual Slalom in Canada—the most prestigious mountain biking event in the world—becoming the first Asian rider ever to win this title.
The silver medal was awarded to Taipei’s Yu Chenxian with a time of 2 hours, 03 minutes, 42.10 seconds, while the bronze went to Kaohsiung’s Liu Shuming, who finished in 2 hours, 04 minutes, 28.09 seconds.
