A male guide surnamed Wang was leading a group of hikers when he accidentally fell off a cliff on the 28th while traveling along the Batongguan Historic Trail. The Yu Shan Branch of Nantou County’s Fire Bureau conducted a multi-day search and found him conscious but suffering from hypothermia about 200 meters from the fall site on the 29th. He was evacuated using a long backboard and carried manually to an open area before being airlifted by helicopter to the Fire Training Center and then transferred to Zhushan Show Chwan Hospital for emergency treatment.
Nantou County Fire Bureau’s 3rd Division Chief Lin Cheng-yi stated that the Yu Shan Fire Brigade received a report on the 28th that nine hikers, including the male guide surnamed Wang, were on Section 10.5K of the Batongguan Historic Trail (near the forest road by the Duiguan Patrol Station), and that one of them, the male guide surnamed Wang, had fallen into a valley and needed rescue.
Yu Shan Branch Squad Leader Hong Rong-zhu led 10 rescuers up the mountain, arriving at the accident site at 3 p.m. to begin the search. They also requested a helicopter to conduct an aerial survey of the incident location, which also yielded no results. At around 6 p.m. that evening, they reported via satellite phone that a backpack had been found above the fall site. Rescuers descended 200 meters into the valley but still found no sign of the missing man. For safety reasons, they set up camp near the accident site that night.
At 7:30 a.m. on the 29th, a helicopter transported 12 members of the second batch of support personnel from Tongfu Junior High School in two trips to join the rescue operation at the accident site. Hong Rong-zhu and his team discovered the injured man in a deep valley approximately 200 meters from where the male guide surnamed Wang had fallen. He was conscious at the time, suffering from hypothermia, with an 8 cm laceration on his forehead, a 2 cm laceration on the top of his head, swollen eyes that could not be opened, and a fractured right wrist.
