A 53-year-old mechanical engineer surnamed Lin in Taichung City was hiking on the Daking No. 10 Trail on New Year’s Day when he suddenly collapsed about 800 meters from the trailhead. He was discovered by passing hikers, who promptly called the police. When firefighters and paramedics arrived, Lin showed no signs of life. Despite being rushed to the hospital for emergency treatment, he was pronounced dead. Police informed his family at the hospital that the deceased had been passionate about sports and had no history of cardiovascular disease, expressing sorrow over his sudden and unexpected death.
Police stated that Lin had gone to the Daking No. 10 Trail alone that day, driving from his residence in Dali District. Several hikers found a man lying unconscious on the trail about 800 meters from the entrance. They shouted for Lin and called the police. When firefighters and paramedics arrived, they first administered CPR, which proved ineffective, then delivered three electric shocks. Throughout the process, Lin did not regain breathing or heartbeat and was urgently taken to the hospital.
“The new year began with a fatal tragedy!” According to reports, the mechanical engineer, who specialized in electrical instrumentation and control, was surnamed Lin and had two daughters. In his spare time, he loved hiking and often challenged himself, having climbed peaks such as the Seven Peaks of Guguan, Bailen, and Baxianshan, capturing beautiful memories through his camera lens. Lin’s daughter told police that her father had no history of cardiovascular disease, had not sought medical treatment recently, and frequently hiked the Daking trails to build leg strength. He was very familiar with the area, and the family could not understand why he would suddenly die.
After receiving the report, the fire department dispatched seven members of the Dongshan Fire Brigade to the scene. They carried the man on a stretcher manually and transported him to the hospital for emergency treatment, but he could not be revived. Initial observations showed no obvious external injuries on his body, and the prosecutor's office has conducted an autopsy to further clarify the cause of death.
