Hiking is a recreational activity for some people, but it carries potential risks. Without trustworthy companions in the wilderness, irreversible consequences may occur. Recently, a Chinese-Canadian woman in Vancouver organized a hiking trip via WeChat with four unfamiliar hikers. However, on the way back, she twisted her ankle, and her companions abandoned her in the wild, leaving her alone until a rescue team arrived after dark.
According to reports from multiple foreign media outlets, a Chinese-Canadian woman in Vancouver set out hiking on September 29 with four hikers she met through WeChat. The group successfully reached the summit, but on the return journey, the woman allegedly twisted her ankle due to exhaustion. While three of the hikers were already moving ahead at a faster pace, one person stayed with her. However, when she became immobile due to the injury, the others simply left her behind.
The woman was in so much pain that she couldn’t move and had no phone signal in the deep mountains to call for help. She was left alone in the wilderness until nightfall. Fortunately, three hours later, she encountered another hiker who kindly helped her to an area with signal to make a distress call. Soon after, the North Shore Rescue team arrived to rescue her.
Although the woman was successfully rescued, the head of the North Shore Rescue team was shocked and strongly criticized the other hikers for their appalling behavior. He noted that if the woman hadn’t met another hiker or if her call for help had gone unanswered, the consequences could have been dire, potentially fatal. He added, “We’ve never seen hikers act like this in 40 years,” highlighting just how outrageous and despicable their actions were.
