A close call with death on the mountain edge: A Spanish couple recently went hiking in the Montseny Massif. Unexpectedly, the weather turned from sunny to overcast during their climb, but they still managed to reach the summit. Just as they were about to take photos at the top, a sudden flash of light sent them flying, though both were fortunately unharmed. They didn’t understand what had occurred until they got home and replayed the camera footage — discovering they had almost been hit by lightning.
According to the Daily Mail, Marcel and his wife Magda Gallardo set off at noon on the 9th to hike the Montseny Massif in Mataro, Catalonia. The weather was clear when they started, but by the time they reached the 1,706-meter summit, clouds rolled in and even hail began to fall.
Undeterred, the couple eventually made it to the top. While taking turns to take photos, a sudden bolt of lightning struck, accompanied by a loud clap of thunder. Both were thrown to the ground and their camera shattered, but they escaped serious injury. At the time, they had no idea what had just happened. It wasn’t until they got home and watched the footage that they realized how close they had come to death.
In an interview, Gallardo revealed that seeing the footage afterward left her shocked. “There was hail, but no thunder at the time, so we were really surprised,” she said. Marcel added that they didn’t know what had happened at the time, but they could smell burning. Friends and family, upon learning they were safe, called them incredibly lucky and even suggested they buy a lottery ticket for good luck.
