The five hikers were led by a leader surnamed Yang and had previously registered with the Snow Mountain National Park Administration to climb Daxue Mountain. They entered the mountain on August 4 and planned to descend on the 10th. Unexpectedly, when Typhoon Lekima struck, the group attempted to exit via Forest Route 230 on Daxue Mountain but encountered a severe landslide at the 28K mark of the route, which blocked their path down the mountain, leaving them stranded in the area.
As the five had insufficient food supplies, they urgently called for help at the Xuanshan Management Station of the Snow Mountain National Park Administration on the afternoon of the 11th. The station then reported the situation to the Dahu Branch of Miaoli County Fire Department and the Snow Mountain National Park Police, who promptly formed a rescue team and headed up the mountain.
It is reported that due to the heavy rainfall brought by Typhoon Lekima, Forest Route 230 suffered multiple landslides of varying sizes along its path, making progress for the rescue team difficult and often requiring detours. The rescue team set out on the 11th, spent the night in the mountains, and continued their mission early in the morning on the 12th around 6 a.m. They are still searching for the stranded hikers in the mountains.
