The Blue Tears of Matsu Go Viral   Ang Lee: Will Make Time to See Them When Back in Taiwan

Every spring and summer, the coastlines of the Matsu Islands emit a captivating pale blue glow, which in recent years has sparked a local "blue tears chasing" craze. The stunning photos of the Blue Tears have drawn comparisons to the iconic scenes from director Ang Lee’s film *Life of Pi*. Liu Zeng-ying, Magistrate of Lienchiang County, shared via his official social media page that Ang Lee mentioned in their correspondence that he hopes to find an opportunity to witness the Matsu Blue Tears in person when he returns to Taiwan.

On the morning of the 27th, Liu Zeng-ying published Ang Lee’s reply on Facebook. In the letter, it was mentioned that on the 15th, he extended an invitation to Ang Lee to visit Matsu and witness the shimmering blue seas reminiscent of those in *Life of Pi*, along with a personal letter, some photos of the Blue Tears, and a sincere heart. With the help of various individuals, the letter was successfully delivered to Director Ang Lee, and Liu expressed joy in having received a response.

According to the post on Liu Zeng-ying’s fan page, Ang Lee wrote in his letter: “I’m very glad to hear that *Pi* has been released and that the magical nocturnal sea phenomenon of Matsu’s Blue Tears has captured global attention. When we created that night scene, we did some research and added imagination — the only actual reference was a nighttime trip to Kenting for observation. I imagine what you’ve described of the Blue Tears of Matsu surpasses anything we could depict. It would certainly be wonderful to experience it firsthand. Currently, I am busy working on a new film and my schedule is tight. But if I have the chance to return to Taiwan in the summer or autumn, I will try to make time to see them and personally thank you all for your kind invitation.”
