From Shinkansen to subways, trains are one of Japan’s most important modes of transportation. Although eating and drinking aren’t prohibited as they are on Taiwan’s MRT, there are still many train etiquette rules to keep in mind. Japanese Naver has compiled a list of seven no-no behaviors you shouldn’t do inside train cars—be sure to watch out for them when traveling in Japan to avoid causing trouble for others.

1. Strong Body Odor
Overpowering perfume or the smell of alcohol after drinking can easily spread in a confined space, making fellow passengers uncomfortable—especially during crowded times. Be especially mindful of this.

2. Eating on the Train
Although eating isn’t banned on Japanese trains, it’s best to avoid consuming strongly scented foods inside the car. Also, if you happen to be riding during rush hour on always-packed trains (like Tokyo’s Yamanote Line), try to finish your meal before boarding or wait until you get off.

3. Don’t Take Up an Extra Seat with Your Luggage
Don’t place your luggage on an empty seat next to you, preventing another passenger from sitting down. If you’re not comfortable putting it on the overhead rack, keep it on your lap. Also, when placing your luggage on the floor, make sure it isn’t sticking too far out to keep the aisle clear.

4. Don’t Apply Makeup on the Train
Applying makeup is a private act—you can do it at home beforehand. Putting on cosmetics in front of others is considered impolite. In addition, the unique scent of cosmetics and flying powder may bother other passengers.

5. Mind Your Elbow When Using Your Smartphone
Many passengers scroll their phones or play games to pass time on the train, but if the car is packed, be sure not to swing your elbows too much or accidentally touch others.

6. Don’t Play Music Too Loud on the Train
To avoid being disturbed by surrounding noise, many people wear headphones to listen to music while commuting. But sometimes the volume is turned up too high, so that everyone around can hear. What’s pleasant music to you might be disturbing background noise for others trying to rest.

7. Avoid Loud Conversations
Whether you’re on a phone call or chatting with friends, remember to keep your voice down so you don’t force other passengers to listen in.
