Taiwan has built its foundation on agriculture. Over time, rice fields have evolved from mere sources of sustenance into massive canvases. Many towns and villages have launched painted rice field projects, using creativity and ingenuity to breathe new life into these fields. On the 8th, Tainan’s 2017 Good Rice Season grandly kicked off in Liujia District, featuring the eye-catching "Miller’s The Gleaners" artwork.

"The Gleaners" (Des glaneuses) is one of the most famous works by French painter Jean-François Millet. The scene of three peasant women gathering leftover grains in a wheat field is considered iconic. This rice field painting reinterprets the masterpiece, vividly recreating the essence of the original artwork. Viewed from above, it looks like three women side by side gathering "rice ears," adding an artistic touch to the simple green rice fields and making it the most valuable painted rice field in Taiwan.

In addition to the classic masterpiece, officials also created a cute chibi-style statue of Guanyin with the two large characters "Harvest" inscribed on it. Liujia District is the fourth-largest rice-producing area in Tainan, and the symbol is meant to bring good luck and pray for abundant harvests year after year. The Tainan Good Rice Season event will run until October 29. In addition to admiring the painted rice field landscape art, visitors can also explore nearby attractions such as the Linfengying Story House and the Holiday Rural Market, planning a delightful rice-scented mini trip.
