The most beautiful underground wonder: Romania’s “Salt Mine Museum” 120 meters below ground

Salina Turda is a historic and massive salt mine located in Turda, Romania’s second-largest city. This salt pit has existed since ancient times, spanning the Middle Ages and continuing all the way to the early 20th century. The local government later converted it into a salt mine museum, and its long history bears witness to the footsteps of human development. On the day it opened in 1992, it began attracting millions of visitors each year, earning it the title of“the most beautiful underground wonder”.

In fact, the mine is divided into different sections, and getting to the lowest level requires taking an elevator down 120 meters, where you can gradually admire the traces of salt mining. Inside, there is also a theater, a small sports field, and a Ferris wheel. Visitors can rent boats to explore the underground lake.
