The most culturally valuable “Louvre of the East” — the Mogao Caves

Commonly known as the Thousand Buddha Caves, the Mogao Caves are currently the world’s largest and richest surviving site of Buddhist art and are regarded as the most significant cultural discovery of the 20th century. The renowned aesthetician Yu Qiuyu once wrote in his book “A Bitter Journey Through Culture”: “Visiting the Mogao Caves is not about seeing a thousand-year-old specimen, but witnessing a life that has thrived for a thousand years.” Among them, the “No. 45 Special Cave” is one of the representative caves from the Mogao Caves’ peak Tang Dynasty period. The Tang Dynasty was the golden age of painted sculptures in the Mogao Caves, excelling not only in creating large Buddha statues but also in crafting life-sized group figures. The sculptures in Cave 45 are a typical masterpiece.

Additionally, the “Mogao Caves Digital Exhibition Center” houses China’s only IMAX dome theater at a UNESCO World Heritage Site, using modern technology to bring cultural heritage resources to life.

Crescent Lake: A Unique Sight of Sand and Water Coexisting Beyond the Frontier

In Dunhuang’s Mingsha Mountain lies an ancient and magical legend of colorful sand. Crescent Lake, embraced by the Mingsha Mountain, has seen the sand mountain encircle the lake and the lake reflect the sand mountain for thousands of years, resembling a piece of smooth, glittering jade embedded in the deep valley of the sand dunes. Known in ancient times as Shajing (Sand Well), it was hailed as one of the Eight Scenic Spots of Dunhuang during the Qing Dynasty. During the Tang Dynasty, Crescent Lake was said to produce iron-back fish and the medicinal herb Seven-Star Grass, believed to cure all diseases and prolong life, hence also called the “Medicine Spring.” The distance between the flowing sand and the spring water is only a few dozen meters. Despite fierce winds, the sand does not bury the spring, and in the midst of the Gobi Desert, the water remains clear and never dries up. This unique landscape feature of “sand and water coexisting, mountain and spring together” forms a special and spectacular sight beyond the frontier.

When visiting the desert area of Mingsha Mountain and seeing Crescent Lake, famed as the “First Spring in the Desert Under Heaven,” it’s essential to ride a camel to admire the beautiful back ridgeline of Mingsha Mountain to complete the perfect desert journey. In this vast desert along the Silk Road, riding the “ship of the desert” evokes a sense of ancient nostalgia, while admiring the beautiful curves of the desert ridgeline makes it seem as if the Silk Road merchants of a thousand years ago are still active before your eyes.

Drive Through Lanzhou to Experience the Charm of the Yellow River
Lanzhou is a key city along the ancient Silk Road. Humans have lived here for 5,000 years, making it an important hub and link connecting ethnic minorities of the Western Regions, as well as the only city in China traversed by the Yellow River. Let’s take a drive to experience the scenic beauty of this Mother River of China.

Zhongshan Bridge, formerly known as Zhenyuan Bridge, is located at the foot of Baita Mountain north of Lanzhou City and in front of Jincheng Pass. It is one of the city’s iconic structures, built in 1907 by Germans. All materials used in the bridge were imported from Germany, making it the oldest ancient bridge in Lanzhou and earning it the title “First Bridge Over the Yellow River Under Heaven.”

Jiayuguan: Majestic and Grand, a Hub of East-West Cultural Exchange

Jiayuguan is the westernmost pass of the Great Wall. Due to its strategic location and the formidable military defense system of “a tunnel every five li, a fort every ten li, a castle every thirty li, and a city every hundred li,” it has long been regarded as an “Impregnable Pass.” On the ancient Silk Road, once you exited Jiayuguan, you entered the Western Regions. Countless caravans and travelers passed through here, making it a medium for East-West cultural exchange and a celebrated symbol of Silk Road culture.

A legend has long been told in Jiayuguan: during the Ming Dynasty construction of the pass, the supervising official demanded that the project manager calculate the materials with absolute precision — a major challenge. Later, with the help of the craftsmen, the manager made an accurate calculation. When the project was completed, all prepared bricks, tiles, wood, and stones were used up, except for one remaining brick. This brick is known as the “Last Brick.” It is still placed on the eaves platform of the Huiji Gate tower and has become a must-see attraction for tourists, showcasing the ingenuity of ancient craftsmen.
