Japan's Largest "Kurobe Dam" Tourist Water Release: Witness the 186-Meter Water Column Cascade Down

Although the Great Snow Wall of Tateyama Kurobe in Japan has ended, the surrounding natural and cultural attractions are still worth visiting. The so-called largest dam in Japan, the "Kurobe Dam," will start its "tourist water release" event today at an altitude of 1,454 meters, allowing visitors to witness the spectacular sight hidden among the high mountains.

The annual Kurobe Dam "tourist water release" features water gushing down from the 186-meter-high dam wall at a rate of 10–15 cubic meters per second, creating a powerful and awe-inspiring spectacle. Beyond being a tourist attraction, the water release also serves a practical purpose—during summer, the water level downstream of the Kurobe River tends to drop, and the release helps ensure adequate water flow downstream.

The Kurobe Dam "tourist water release" runs from today until October 15. Additionally, those traveling on the Kurobe Canyon Railway between Tateyama and Kurobe can exchange one round-trip train ticket from Alishan (Chiayi) to Hohhot Lake for a free one-way ticket on the Kurobe Canyon Railway before the end of November, allowing visitors to explore this stunning scenery, which is listed among Japan’s Top 100 Hidden Gems.
