My travel buddy Mika said she wanted to sleep in that day, so I had to find lunch on my own. I wandered around Nippombashi, eventually stumbling upon Nippombashi Dōgu Yokocho, where I found all kinds of small items for sale (cookware, tableware, household goods, baked goods, etc.). After spending some time there and getting ready to head back to the hotel, I noticed a restaurant with a queue forming outside — and it was only 11 AM. I decided to join the line and wait for it to open for lunch. The fact that everyone in the queue was Japanese made me even more excited.

People were already lining up at 11 AM

Owl Restaurant—I remembered seeing it on Tabelog, but I had thought it was part of the owl café series. Turns out, it's actually a bar/restaurant instead.

While waiting in line, I started studying the menu. The section with the red circle indicated that only 15 portions were available before opening (the number seems to vary daily), and by the time I took the photo, they were already sold out, marked as “sold out.” I could already see the grilled beef...<き炙り肉重写15的时候我就知道这一定是大家会抢著点的。

Looking at the menu, I was glad Mika hadn’t come along — this place served beef set meals. Grilled beef for just 900 yen.<き炙り肉重,是每日限定,一定要先抢这个啊~好便宜!

If I hadn’t managed to snag the limited grilled beef...<き炙り肉重,就点这个黑毛和牛的炭q<き炙り肉重,虽然比较贵一点。但看起来跟炭q<き炙り肉重也不一样。

This huge bowl of grilled beef...<き炙り肉重只要900日圆唷!

The queue kept getting longer, and finally, ten minutes before opening, the staff came out to take orders. Of course, I couldn’t understand Japanese, so I had to use hand gestures. Thankfully, I had already figured out the menu, so I pointed to the grilled beef.<き炙り肉重就可以了!

I was given a seat at the counter — turns out, it’s a small bar-style eatery.

That’s all there is to order for lunch here.

This place really does feel like a cozy little drinking bar — it’s tiny.

The hardworking chef was busy preparing lunch sets — the aroma was amazing.

Grilled beef<き炙り肉重,900日圆。

Japanese miso soup, which tasted pretty good too!!

This bowl is the star — the grilled beef<き炙り肉重,上面浓浓的洋葱酱汁,端上桌就好香~

The portion size is really generous — one woman could definitely get full from this (the person next to me was also a solo Japanese woman having lunch).

This beef looked amazing — covered in a rich layer of sauce. It’s made with finely sliced onions simmered slowly in soy sauce and sugar, and of course, there are other secret ingredients I don’t know about. It’s topped with lots of vegetables and onions, adding volume and nutrition.

The lid of the bowl can temporarily hold the meat and veggies so you can get to the rice underneath without everything piling up.

And there’s the white rice~~~

When you lift the lid, you can really see how tall the bowl is. Someone with a smaller appetite might want to ask the staff for less rice.

Although it’s not wagyu, it’s “absolutely delicious!!!!!!!” The chef’s grilling skills are top-notch. The beef is cooked to about medium-rare over charcoal, giving off a mouthwatering smoky aroma. The slices are just the right size for a single bite of steak — the juice is sweet, and the texture is super tender. Eating it gave me a real “Wow, Japanese beef is amazing!” moment.

This piece has some tendon — I spent a bit more time chewing on this one, but the deliciousness of the beef was undeniable, even if it got a bit tangy on my teeth (lol).

I have to say, Japanese white rice is really… incredible. I think even without the beef, I could finish this bowl just with the rice coated in the sauce — the sweet and savory onion sauce is just too delicious. Oh, and if you think the “sauce” isn’t enough, you can ask the server for more. They’ll give you extra for a richer flavor.

Finally finished it all~~ (so full)

After paying, I stepped out of the restaurant, and the queue was still going strong!!! Looks like the 1300-yen set meals go just as fast.
Little side note: Since this was my last day in Osaka, I didn’t have much cash left. I had planned to use my card, but this place doesn’t accept credit cards — only cash. I almost had to stay and wash dishes (hahaha). Just a heads-up for everyone.
