The "Perfectly Wonderful Pink Lane" Exhibition Opens – Reviving Old Buildings with Art!

2015Pink Lane Taipei East District Contemporary Art ExhibitionOfficially opened on the 25th, this year marks its tenth edition. With "perfect and wonderful" as the theme, the exhibition chose 10 completely different types of spaces in Taipei’s East District—including squares, parks, military dependents' villages, apartment residences, hotels, neighborhood venues, brand stores, and corporate buildings—as art hubs. It brought together works from nearly 30 domestic and international artists, integrating the uniqueness of each location and elements of local culture to create a new dialogue between art and space, offering the public a fresh artistic experience.

Preserving aging military and residential buildings through art for the community
This year’s exhibition area further achieved spatial regeneration and intervention. Aging military dependents' villages and old residential apartments—Tongshan Military Village and Da’an Old Residence—temporarily paused urban renewal processes during the exhibition period to serve as temporary exhibition sites. This reflects Pink Lane’s attempt to infuse aesthetics into daily life and revive the city’s character.

Tongshan Street
Formerly an Air Force dependents' village, it gradually fell into disuse and abandonment over time due to changing needs. The stone-brick walls, single-story tile-roofed houses, and lush greenery in the spacious courtyards offer a rare sense of tranquility in the city. Though the old buildings are dilapidated, traces of past lives still linger faintly. At this pivotal moment of architectural transformation, three contemporary artists—Tsai Tzu-fen, Wang Chen-wei, and Veronika Richterová—created site-specific works inspired by nature, using bamboo branches, driftwood, and recycled bottles as materials to bring art into the courtyards.

Czech artist Veronika Richterová used discarded materials (recycled PET bottles) to create vibrant, never-wilting plants and flowers beneath the old house’s wall, satirizing plastic industrial materials that bring economic benefits and convenience but also generate significant pollution. This serves as a reminder to reflect on humanity’s environmental impact beyond aesthetics.

Da’an Old Residence
A four-story apartment near Xinwei Market, Da’an Old Residence (formerly an employee dormitory for the Bank of Taiwan), is located at the intersection of Xinyi Road and Da’an Road, situated at the junction of a commercial golden district, the celebrity-lined alleys of the East District, and the everyday life of a cultural and educational area. The daily life here intersects with urban trends and fashion, where contrasting lifestyles clash. The square, ivory-colored building lies between Taipei’s capitalistic golden zone and the everyday life of ordinary people. Inside, the artworks reflect the cultural collision between the two.

The unique characteristics of the area where the building stands also contribute to its rich, multi-layered flavor. During the renovation of the old house, seven contemporary artists—Yin Xiuzhen, Takayuki Ito, Wu Can-zheng, Masaaki Kishimoto, Chen Po-yi, Chen Wan-jen, and You Wen-fu—started with deconstructing and reconstructing urban memory. Using diverse creative materials, they reinterpreted the space, infusing it with local memories and timeless, fantastical imagination.

You Wen-fu, themed around "construction," wrapped the entire building with bamboo strips as sculpture, combining traditional craftsmanship with modern architecture through accumulated manual labor and physical effort.

Japanese artist Masaaki Kishimoto collected household utensils and street vendor wares from local residents, stacking them using traditional techniques of cutting and gluing to document the traces and emotional imprints of local life.

Chinese artist Yin Xiuzhen collected old clothes to weave into a book, transforming the life experiences and knowledge power displayed by many into an interpretation where individuals are compiled like a body of knowledge.

To permanently preserve the precious collective memories of these ten years, Pink Lane, while celebrating its tenth anniversary, has also entered a new era. Through collaboration with Google Cultural Institute - Art Project, it has successfully gone digital. Cloud technology has given a new definition to the museum without walls, allowing anyone to transcend borders and time to appreciate Pink Lane in detail. The exhibits, installations, and interviews from past Pink Lane editions will be stored on Google Cloud, letting art enthusiasts relive the experience.
