Qijin Black Sand Arts Festival – A Summer Sports Day for Furry Friends!

While students are on summer vacation and eager to go out and have fun, pets deserve to get out and about too. On the 25th, the Qijin Black Sand Arts Festival in Kaohsiung hosted a pet sports day, where furry friends from all over—including poodles, Chihuahuas, and border collies—came together to compete in events such as frisbee catching, retrieval games, and a 50-meter sprint. The winning dogs received prizes and cash bonuses, and every participant got a pet-specific frisbee.

The “Qijin Black Sand Arts Festival” kicked off on July 4th. Starting last Saturday (the 18th), it gathered sand sculpting masters from across Taiwan for an exciting sand sculpture competition, sparking a wave of sand art enthusiasm. Other highlights included an energetic and thrilling beach volleyball tournament, a photo op with free beer giveaway, and a newly added beach bonfire music feast featuring indigenous flavors—perfect for enjoying the sunset and the starry skies over Qijin Beach!

The first Qijin Sand Sculpture Creative Competition brought together 16 teams of top sand sculptors from around the country. With the theme “The Beauty of Kaohsiung,” they used land art to express their love for the city. In the end, the duo of Wu Fangjing and Wang Jie took home the championship and a prize of NT$30,000 with their piece “The Story of the Kapok Tree,” which depicted Kaohsiung as a beautiful girl through vivid and delicate craftsmanship. The runner-up created a Q-version of the famous Lotus Pond Dragon and Tiger Pagoda, while the third-place winner was the couple’s collaborative piece “Onward to Beautiful Island.”
