Hsinchu’s “Neiwan Police Station”: A Charming Japanese-Style Old Building That Has Become a Popular Photo Spot

Police stations, home to law enforcement officers, are not only outposts that protect local communities but have now also become tourist attractions. Hsinchu County’s Guanxi Substation and Neiwan Police Station have been designated as a county-level historical site and a historic building, respectively, thanks to their distinctive Japanese architectural exteriors and beautiful surrounding environments. They are now popular sightseeing and photo spots in Hsinchu County.
The Hsinchu County Government pointed out that the Guanxi Substation was built during the Japanese colonial Showa era in the Asia Development Style. It features reinforced brick walls with a pebble-dashed surface, wooden roof trusses, and Japanese tiles, showcasing the advanced architectural techniques of the time — a style that was very popular back then. Today, apart from minor additions and renovations, over 90% of the original structure remains intact. Its unique local characteristics and historical value led to its designation as a Hsinchu County Historic Park in 2006.

The Neiwan Police Station is a traditional Japanese-style wooden building with a rain-shedding board exterior. The century-old osmanthus tree in front of the station has not only witnessed the development of Neiwan but also the changes of the Neiwan Line railway. The area around the police station boasts a beautiful environment and excellent views. From the station, visitors can overlook the entire Neiwan Railway Station and nearby commercial area. A staircase trail next to the station leads uphill to Dongwo, where visitors can explore the ruins of the Wooden Horse Trail, attracting many tourists to stop and admire.
In line with the relocation of the Guanxi Substation, the Hsinchu County Cultural Affairs Bureau plans to create a “Guanxi Community Hub” concept in the future, transforming the police substation complex into a historic park. This will not only provide a place for tourists visiting Guanxi to rest and explore, but also serve as a community activity space for residents of the nearby Dongxing, Xi’an, Nanxiong, and Beidou neighborhoods.
