Last updated 2026-09-25 — Macau’s old-school cafés have introduced a new way to enjoy “thick toast,” even more irresistible than Japan’s melonpan. Macau has long been known for its delicious food, ranging from traditional cha chaan tengs and Chinese restaurants to classic Portuguese cuisine. Among them, there’s an old shop in Macau that’s been around for over 20 years called “Sun Hing Fat Coffee & Food.” The owner created a “thick toast” twice as thick as traditional toast—reaching up to 6cm—thanks to his girlfriend. With a crispy outside and soft inside, it’s a bite that draws in many young diners.

Macau’s old-school cafés have introduced a new way to enjoy “thick toast,” even more irresistible than Japan’s melonpan. Macau has long been known for its delicious food, ranging from traditional cha chaan tengs and Chinese restaurants to classic Portuguese cuisine. Among them, there’s an old shop in Macaucalled “Sun Hing Fat Coffee & Food,” where the owner created a “thick toast” twice as thick as traditional toast—reaching up to 6cm—thanks to his girlfriend. With a crispy outside and soft inside, it’s a bite that draws in many young diners.

▲Sun Hing Fat Food has been around for years and is a beloved local institution.

Since opening in 1990, “Sun Hing Fat Coffee & Food” was originally named “William.” The whole family is involved in the food and beverage industry, sourcing bread made by the cousin, and blending their own teas to create the famous Hong Kong-style milk tea. Owner Wong Chun Kei said the most popular item at first was the iced milk tea, which uses three types of tea for flavor and color. “One for color, one for aroma, and one for taste.” The secret tea blend became a hit, paired with the family’s bread, and later they developed more dishes. “Sun Hing Fat” has thus been passed down two generations and remains beloved by locals.

Logically speaking, Macau has many delicious old-school shops, and it’s common to see second-generation-run ones thriving. What makes Sun Hing Fat worth highlighting is its innovative product—the “thick toast.” Like other cha chaan tengs, but here the toast is twice as thick, estimated at about 6cm. Wong Chun Kei laughed and said he first wanted to make thick toast because the girl he liked often came to the shop. “Because I wanted her to remember me, I put in some effort to develop it.”

Wong Chun Kei chatted cheerfully about the dishes in the shop, hence the“to attract his girlfriend’s attention”story may or may not be true, but the “thick toast” is genuinely impressive. After multiple tests on texture and frying time, 6cm was found to be the ideal thickness. The bread is homemade from scratch, resulting in a crispy crust and a soft, flour-scented interior. Paired with their signature iced milk tea, it’s a fantastic summer dessert experience in Macau.

Besides the thick toast (25 MOP) and milk tea, “Sun Hing Fat Coffee & Food” also offers well-known dishes like Portuguese egg and pork chop (22 MOP), Portuguese chicken rice (33 MOP), q tomato pork chop (48 MOP), and others. These blend traditional Macanese and Portuguese flavors in a wonderfully diverse menu, making it a must-visit for travelers in Macau.
