Located on Hougang Street in Taipei’s Shilin District, there is a Japanese-style eatery with a particularly amusing name:“Result Restaurant”.
Just a five-minute walk from Shilin Night Market, it shines like a ruby hidden in the alleys behind the Shilin Sports Center. Foodies looking to enjoy authentic Japanese cuisine in Taiwan shouldn’t miss this spot.
Upon approaching the entrance, you’ll realize it’s truly a quaint little shop. The Japanese-style signage, chalkboards, and decorations evoke memories of the manga “Shinya Shokudo” (Midnight Diner) by Yarō Abe. Stepping inside, bright glass under warm yellow lighting, accompanied by slow-tempo Japanese ballads, blends with the rich aroma of oden broth and hearty curry, making your mouth water.

▲ The couple works as a team—the wife handles customer service, preparing oden and fried items, while the husband keeps busy making sushi, cleaning dishes, and tidying up tables and chairs.
Thanks to its relatively hidden location, the usual clientele includes local residents, passersby office workers, and visitors drawn by word of mouth. Owner Qiu Yihua shares that many foreign guests specifically come to Result Restaurant to enjoy authentic Japanese food, and it’s also a go-to place for Japanese expats in Taiwan to savor the taste of home.

▲ Prices are really very affordable—our owner’s approach to hospitality lets you enjoy refined cuisine at honest prices.
So what makes this Japanese restaurant, run by a native Taiwanese couple, so authentically Japanese? It turns out that the owner, Zhang Zhiqiang, learned the trade from a five-star Taiwanese Japanese cuisine chef. From ingredients to recipes, every step is strictly followed to bring genuine Japanese flavors to Taiwan.

▲ Fresh sushi comes in two types: seaweed or tofu skin wraps. The owner insists that sushi must be made fresh to be delicious and is never sold the next day.
The menu is quite varied, featuring sushi, oden, and curry rice as mainstays, along with special lunchtime set meals. The tiny space accommodates about three table sets and a small bar counter, seating around ten people. Prices here are very budget-friendly,with standard business meals costing just around NT$100 per person for a satisfying meal. For families or weekend visits, ordering a few side dishes with a main course will cost about NT$150–180 per person for a hearty feast.

▲ The best-selling item is the curry. Result Restaurant’s curry differs from typical Taiwanese-style versions—it contains no meat at all. Based on a recipe from a five-star Japanese chef and simmered by the owner’s wife, it has earned praise from many Japanese customers who say it reminds them of home.
Qiu Yihua has a bit of a cleanliness obsession and pays great attention to keeping the kitchen and dining area spotless. During the midday break and at closing time each evening, the couple thoroughly cleans this “little place” together. After two years in business, Result Restaurant shows no signs of grease stains—the tableware, chairs, and everything else are neat, orderly, and sparkling clean.

▲ Though small, the shop is spotless and well-organized, creating a quiet, comfortable environment that enhances the dining experience.
When it comes to flavor, Qiu Yihua has her own strict standards—all ingredients must be washed repeatedly with filtered water before use. Even the tap water passes through triple-layer water filters, ensuring no impurities reach the dishes. On typhoon days when water quality is compromised, she buys purified water and runs it through the same filtration system. For the oden broth, she simmers a large quantity of vegetables daily without adding any MSG. While some may find the taste a bit light, the natural sweetness and umami of the broth are truly unforgettable.

▲ Oden is highly recommended. Its perfect broth offers an authentic Japanese oden experience at very fair prices.
If you’re a regular, you might notice slight daily variations in the broth. This is due to Qiu Yihua’s no-MSG policy and the fact that the fresh vegetables purchased each day vary, bringing a refreshing sense of anticipation to diners.
Result Restaurant is closed on Saturdays and open Sunday to Friday from 11:30 AM to 2:00 PM and 5:00 PM to 8:30 PM. Since the couple has two adorable daughters, they keep their hours shorter to care for their kids, so those wanting to try authentic Japanese cuisine should be mindful of the operating times.
