Hidden Gems in Singapore: The Rainbow Haji Lane That Captivates at First Sight

In the Arab Quarter around Kampong Glam in Singapore, there’s a new hidden gem —“Haji Lane”— where rows of vividly colored low-rise houses sit side by side, resembling a fairytale alleyway in Europe, instantly winning hearts and becoming a popular spot among local youths.

Although located in the Arab Quarter, Haji Lane has a completely different vibe. The strong Middle Eastern atmosphere of Arab Street actually highlights the uniqueness of Haji Lane, known as Singapore’s “Rainbow Lane,” where colorful graffiti meets the old European-style architecture left over from the British colonial period. According to local guide Gary, Haji Lane used to be a ship supply station due to its proximity to the harbor, and the neat row of buildings were wartime warehouses.

Similar to Taiwan’s cultural and creative boom, a group of young returnees and local designers spotted the potential in these once-abandoned old buildings. With the concept of “revitalizing the old town,” they gave the area a fresh coat of paint and transformed the interiors, effectively bringing Haji Lane back to life. Every shop in the lane is unique, emphasizing concepts of humanity, art, and design. From personalized boutiques and vintage stores to cafés, hair salons, and even art galleries, visitors can experience Singapore in an entirely new light.

Locals say, “You must visit Haji Lane at night.” As it turns out, come evening, Haji Lane transforms into a great spot for a drink, and you can even find Middle Eastern-style hookahs here. No wonder locals often say that if you want to experience Singapore’s “underground culture,” you can’t miss Haji Lane at night — it’s lively, cozy, and surreal.
