A beacon in the darkness—the new look of “Zhongzheng Bridge,” the highest bridge in northern Taiwan

After a year of renovation, Hsinchu’s Zhongzheng Bridge, which connects Zhubei, Xhuqlin, and Zhudong, officially reopened to traffic on the 17th. The Zhongzheng Bridge shortens travel time between these urban areas, and with its main bridge tower standing an impressive 84 meters tall, it has also become the highest bridge in northern Taiwan. The dazzling lights adorning the bridge at night make the structure resemble a bright beacon in a dark world—truly magnificent.

The Zhongzheng Bridge features an asymmetrical cable-stayed design, with its main tower standing 83.5 meters high. Its foundation is embedded 28 meters deep into the riverbed. This cable-stayed design also reduces the number of piers and mitigates safety concerns such as river erosion, making it reputedly the tallest bridge in northern Taiwan.The design inspiration was drawn from a Ming Dynasty painting titled “Wind in the Bamboos,” combining flowing lines with the structural form of the bridge itself to create an elegant aesthetic.

Zhongzheng Bridge was originally opened to traffic at the end of 1981, but after being severely damaged by typhoons, multiple piers were destroyed, and parts of the bridge deck even fractured. In response, Hsinchu County Government applied for funding to renovate the bridge, and construction officially began in 2014. After a year of hard work, the renovation was successfully completed. To ensure the stability and integrity of the Zhongzheng Bridge, surrounding river channels have been reinforced and flood control systems upgraded.
