"That was a story from over 20 years ago," said Ah Mo (pseudonym).
I remember it was at some hotel in Sun Moon Lake. That time, I went out to stay elsewhere with my dad. I’m not sure if it was because my dad was particularly cautious or what, but on the day we checked into the room, everything was normal during our usual washing up, nothing seemed unusual. However, before going to bed, he suddenly asked me to help him move the sofa to block the door, and he also made sure all the windows and doors were locked.
I thought it was very strange and asked my dad why. But at the time, my dad didn’t explain anything. With a very serious look in his eyes, he told me, "Just do as I say!" In addition, my dad also instructed me that if I heard any sounds at night, I shouldn’t pay them any mind. I sensed that my dad felt somehow different from usual. I felt that it wouldn’t be quite right to keep asking, and there was some indescribable feeling, so I just kept quiet.
As it turned out, that night I first heard faint crying, which later became increasingly piercing. I was both curious and scared, clutching the Buddhist beads I usually carried, covering my head with the quilt and not daring to peek out. Then there was the sound of someone knocking on the door non-stop, very urgently, and eventually they even started kicking: "Bang bang bang!" The lights that had been turned off would turn on and off by themselves, and the knocking didn’t happen just once. The scariest part was that the tables and chairs were shaking—it was truly terrifying.
But the strange thing was, when I got up after seven in the morning, it was as if none of it had happened. It’s been many years, but the memory is roughly like this.
